"Hi, If I purchase a via Expedia.co.uk for a hotel accommodation to stay in the USA can my company claim VAT? In expedias order acknowledgement t's not clear. Please help."
Hi and thanks for your question. We have asked our Technical experts, and they have advised if you are being charged local tax for accommodation in the USA , you can’t recover this on a UK VAT return. You may want to contact the US tax authorities if you are looking for a method to recover the tax being charged .
In response to Anonymous who asked:
"is vat on insurance zero or exempt?"
Hi and thanks for your question. We have asked our technical experts, and they have advised generally insurance is exempt or standard, though it depends on what is being provided specifically as well . Please read VAT notice 701/36 for full information.
As a VAT registered business if I receive a deposit for the sale of goods I understand I am required to account for output VAT on the deposit when received. However, am I required to raise a VAT invoice for the deposit within a certain period of time or am I only required to raise a VAT invoice when the goods are eventually supplied?
If the deposit is an advance payment then you should charge VAT on it if the main supply has VAT and raise an invoice within 30 days of the tax point arising. There are different types of deposit, however, that do not necessarily create a tax point and do not require VAT to be charged please read VAT notice 700 section 14 and 14.2.3.
