If I have a quarter in which I have no vat to pay or claim, do I simply put 0 in all the boxes?
    Thank you.

    Hi,

    Thanks for your question.

If you had no sales or purchases, imports, exports or adjustments in the period then you would complete a nil return with 0 in every box.

    Hope this helps.

Today we received the HMRC VAT business help e-mail. Am I right to admit that from April 2019, companies won’t be able to use the HMRC VAT Online services anymore to fill and post the VAT return? My company is a very small limited company, we even don’t resource to an accountant to comply with our HMRC obligations.

    Hi,

    Thanks for your question.

Yes, from April 2019 businesses with a taxable turnover above the VAT registration threshold will have to sign up to Making Tax Digital in order to submit VAT returns.

Further information can be found in the link below:

I have a question. I run a small community group and only have a small amount of VAT to reclaim each month. Do I still need to buy a copy of the approved software, or can I continue to enter details electronically via the HMRC portal?

    Hi,

If you’re taxable turnover is above the VAT registration threshold (£85000) you will be required to use external software to submit VAT returns.

If your turnover is below the threshold you have the option to submit your VAT returns using your existing online account without buying any software.

Please refer to the following link regarding Making Tax Digital:

    Hi Rivera,

If you do not already have an account activated for submitting your VAT returns, you can call the helpline on 0300 200 3700 and request a copy of your VAT registration certificate to be posted to you.

    I hope this helps.

I have been submitting my vat returns online for the last 5 years then some idiot in HMRC decides I have to have extra security in order to submit my return by keying in a code from a phone. Having no landline we use a mobile phone but with being in a very poor reception area this security system is impossible. Your website page states that we should be allowed to file paper returns but correspondence insists that we can only file online. Have been unable to submit nil returns for 3 quarters for 2 companies and all HMRC is interested in is collecting the assessments and penalties derived from not allowing me to submit my VAT returns on time.

Even your video on how to submit a VAT return is out of date as it makes no mention of the additional security needed of a text code which assumes you can actually receive it. Pity HMRC dont realise some parts of UK still dont have reliable mobile reception so this layer of security is impossible to comply with. Still its a good cash generator screwing businesses that cannot comply with assessments and penalties.
