We will have the software in place for MTD and the link to HMRC but that will not be until next week, April 1st 2019.

However, we signed up online for the service and have still to make our February submission which will not be in the digital format.
As we have signed up for MTD we cannot make our February submission in the old online way.

Any suggestions ?

Hi clairec,

Thanks for your question.

Section 4.2.1 of VAT Notice 700/22 explains what a digital link is.

VAT notice 700/22: Making Tax Digital for VAT

In reply to CLAREC - Bridging Software is for the link between your figures (spreadsheet or software or both) and HMRC, NOT between the spreadsheet and the software. So for example, you've mentioned that your software will not be MTD compatible so what you will need to do is export your VAT return figures from the software into an excel/CSV file and then use bridging software to send the figures from the bridging software to HMRC. I've only used the Sage and Iris bridging software myself and both do the job fine.
I would contact your accountant to see if they would mind just submitted your figures each quarter through their bridging software (a 5/10 minute job done by them would be a lot cheaper than paying for new software).

In reply to DARYLSLINN - if you are looking to submit your 28th February VAT return the submission deadline is not until next Friday? You've said you will have access to the MTD software from Monday, so surely you will be able to submit the Feb 2019 return using the new software next week.

Hi,

This is a reply to the question from LizH on 27/03/2019 at 10:49:56.

Online services may be slow during busy times, particularly when close to the sign up date.

We have a useful page here which has links to check for any problems with the service and how to get help:

Hi,

This is a reply to the question from darylslinn on 27/03/2019 at 11:30:10.

As soon as you sign up for Making Tax Digital you need to complete any VAT returns that have not already been submitted via your software.
The deadline for a Feb 2019 return is normally April 07th 2019, so you should be able to submit the return on time.

We have more information here:

Does the January/Feb/March submission need to be via digital link?
I have applied for the confirmation that the link exists but have not had it from HMRC

Hi,

In response to the question on staying on the old system.

If you are operating below the VAT threshold £85,000 on 01 Apr 2019, there is no need for you to sign up to Making Tax Digital for VAT, and you can continue to file returns in the normal way using the current process that is familiar to you.

In response to the question dated 03/04/2019 08:37:10 asking "does the January/Feb/March submission need to be via digital link?"

Hi,

Thanks for your question.

All full VAT Returns from the 01 April 2019 must be submitted via MTD routes.

If you have a VAT Return covering up to 31 Mar 2019, and you haven’t already signed up to Making Tax Digital for VAT, you should be able to complete in the normal manner.

We do give a red warning message on each page, just in case you have already signed up to MTD, but as long as you haven’t you should be able to go forward and submit in the normal manner. Keep pressing the ‘next’ button until you get to the VAT return.

I hope this helps.

This is for LizH

I had this problem too and contacted the HMRC support people. It is a known technical problem that they are hoping to sort soon. I have been assured that it should be sorted before I need to submit my first MTD VAT return, but also that if it isn't then I won't be penalised.
I'm keeping the emails from them just in case!

I submitted my Feb VAT return using MTD, it produced the Error code : TAX_PERIOD_NOT_ENDED
Sage is telling me:
Hi Mike, this error occurs because HMRC are not pushing through your VAT periods. You will need to contact them and ask them to push through your VAT periods.
Please advise.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your question.

If you have signed up to MTD for VAT and linked your software, both successfully, then completion of the return should have no issues. I am afraid ‘ask them to push through VAT returns’ does not really mean anything to HMRC, so maybe discuss again with your software provider, and call the VAT online helpdesk on 0300 200 3701 if still not resolved.
