Hi Mark
If you are self-employed and not VAT registered you can claim the 95% business use of the mobile phone as a business expense.
To help further we have a webinar which covers expenses a self-employed person can claim, please see this link https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/hmrc-webinars-email-alerts-and-videos
There is also very useful help and support on GOV.UK https://www.gov.uk/expenses-if-youre-self-employed/overview

What if Mark's original scenario was identical, except rather than being a sole trader the person is sole-director of a limited company?

I am self employed - based at a fixed location with a landline. I use my personal mobile phone to speak to clients poss about 10% of my calls are on the mobile. Can I claim any part of my mobile phone bill as an expense

I use traditional accounting

Hi Mark

The fact that you are a director and treated in the same way as an employee for payroll purposes changes the nature of the original question and we are now talking about PAYE expenses and benefits. Please refer to the guidance about mobile phones on GOV.UK HERE

Hi tranquilbob

As a sole trader you can claim business use of a mobile phone. There is more guidance on business expenses for the self-employed on GOV.UK. Here is a link for you https://www.gov.uk/expenses-if-youre-self-employed HMRC Admin 3
