Multiple IDs

02/05/2019 12:39:59
Please can someone explain to me why I have ended up with multiple Government "gateway" ids? I am one individual who has positions with a number of entities:

- my tax as an individual;
- my role as a director of company 'x';
- my role as a director of company 'y';
- my role as a farmer;
- my role as a parent.

Surely you identify me once as an individual and allow me to manage the entities appropriately?

P.S. I am perfectly aware of what is involved in permission systems and how they link an individual to a series of entities with a set of permissions ... I just don't think the .gov sites do that do they?

Hi,

Thanks for your question.

You are able to create multiple Government Gateway accounts. You would have multiple Gateway User IDs and passwords if you have created numerous accounts.

Having several accounts is not a problem unless you have enrolled for a specific service (e.g. submitting Self Assessment tax returns online, VAT online, etc.).

If this is the case, the enrolment is tied to the specific Gateway user ID and password you set it up with. I.e. you have two Gateway accounts. One of which is enrolled for Self Assessment (SA) online. In order to access the SA functions, you must sign in with the Gateway credentials you enrolled for Self Assessment with. You are able to access the Personal Tax Account (PTA) using any of your Government Gateway credentials.

In your circumstances, you would ideally have one Gateway account that should work for everything – the only exceptions being if one of them has Self Assessment enrolment (if applicable); and you may have organisation accounts for your companies (for VAT, Corporation Tax, etc.)

Hi there,

Thanks for your question.

If you do not have your Government Gateway user ID, there should be a "forgotten user ID" option at the sign in page which in most cases will allow you to retrieve it.

If not, or if you have any issues, then you can contact us either via webchat or by calling the Online Services Helpdesk and we can reissue it to you.

Technical support with HMRC online services

Lines open 8am - 8pm Monday to Friday, 8am - 4pm on Saturday and 9am - 5pm on Sunday.
