I am trying to identify the UTR for the company that I am working so that I can register for Making Tax digital. However when I send the online request via the HMRC website using the exact same details as those on Companies House, we do not receive any correspondance with the UTR. How can I check that the details submitted are correct (even though they are exactly those on the Companies House website) so that we can have the UTR issued?

You can recover your log in details using the forgotten user id and forgotten password links on the sign in page for your Personal Tax Account. You will only be able to do this if you have access to the email address your ex-husband used when creating the account.
