Filing VAT

08/05/2019 11:46:24
Hi
We are changing accountants and have decided that we will start to file VAT ourselves. Our accountant has always filed our returns up until now.

Do I need to request a Governement Gateway Login?
Is there a way I can get a copy of our VAT Certificate?

Many Thanks

Hi,

Thanks for your question.

Yes you must submit your VAT returns electronically as per the guidance in the link below:

How to fill in and submit your VAT Return (VAT Notice 700/12) - section 5

This would require you to create a login on the GOV.UK website. However, if your business is required to file under Making Tax Digital for VAT then they must file using commercial software compatible with Making Tax Digital. It is the businesses obligation to check and see if they meet the requirements as per:

VAT Notice 700/22: Making Tax Digital for VAT

If this is the case then a list of approved commercial software providers is found here:

Find software that's compatible with Making Tax Digital for VAT

and a step by step process of signing up is also found here:

Making Tax Digital for VAT as a business: step by step

VAT certificates can be obtained by two methods. A business can print off their VAT certificate through the online account on GOV.UK once an enrolment for submit VAT returns has been added.

If this cannot be done then contact would need to be made to the VAT helpline on 0300 200 3700 to discuss the possibility of sending out a copy to the business address held on file.

I hope this helps.

You can't enrol for Gov.UK unless you know the date of registration-chicken and egg. This is why the query has arisen.

Hi,

When you attempt to enrol for VAT you are correct it will ask you for 5 pieces of information.

A VAT certificate is automatically issued out to the business address on the record when a registration has been completed that confirms certain details needed.

However, if this has been lost and no records have been kept, due to the secure nature of the information the only way to confirm these would be to contact HMRC and clear security procedures.

If you are unable to clear these a copy of the VAT certificate may be able to be sent to the address on file.

If you want to discuss this further, contact details can be found in the link below:
