MY VAT DIRECT DEBIT HASN'T BEEN TAKEN

13/05/2019 08:06:23
I submitted my VAT return in April as I have done for the last 2 years, knowing the Direct Debit will come out on May 10th. After I think 7 days, I switched my SageOne Account details to the new MTD system. I've had all the confirmations that everything has been successful.
And yet no payment taken.... should I just sit and wait?

MY VAT DIRECT DEBIT HASN'T BEEN TAKEN

14/05/2019 11:29:56
I wouldn't bother calling HMRC, I spoke to them this morning about this exact thing and they said that it was because I hadn't transferred the direct debit over until 9th May (after the deadline) which is not true. MTD was applied for and confirmed by 24th April, so left plenty of time for it to transfer over.
The person I spoke to said that they couldn't tell me how long it takes for Direct Debits to transfer, and refused to put me through to anyone else as "noone at HMRC has that information".
So how anyone with a D/D is meant to know how much time to leave before switching to MTD is beyond me...

Hi,

I am sorry for your experience when contacting HMRC previously.

Currently the direct debit process is for businesses with pre-existing direct debits that currently pay VAT should not sign up in the 7 working days leading up to, or the 5 working days after their VAT Return is due. This is to give sufficient time for this to be put in place as if not this may affect collection of the direct debits.

There has been issues affecting collections of direct debits where businesses have followed the above process but direct debits have not been collected. This is currently under investigation and in the meantime the advice from HMRC is for businesses to make manual payments whilst this is being done. If you believe you have been affected by this issue you must raise your case to the VAT online services helpdesk on the methods found here:

If any surcharges have been raised to the account then you would need to follow the information from Default surcharge (VAT Notice 700/50) which advises of grounds for appeal and how to do so.

HMRC Admin 13 - no point advising people to phone or webchat - you can't get through on the phone, and all webchat advisers are busy!

My direct debit was due to be taken 10th May. It wasn't. So I've paid it manually via the form on the website.

Seems a total shambles. Maybe you could advise when is a good time to call when there is somebody to actually speak to. The first 3 minutes are an automated voice speaking incredibly slowly speaking information that is already online.
