Subject: Not self employed

I applied for online tax self assessment as I was planning to do child minding alongside university however I didn't end up doing the child minding. I forgot that I had applied for self assessment as it was over a year ago but I had a letter to remind me to complete it. I went online and stated that I have never been self employed, but I have since had an email reminder. I'm worried that I will be penalised for not completing the online tax return even though I never went self employed.

Hi Gemma,

You can use the Self assessment criteria checker to quickly establish if you should be in self assessment, to check if you need to submit a tax return and to request to cease a self assessment record.

The criteria checker can be found at gov.uk/check-if-you-need-a-tax-return

Hi
I can't sign in for tax return it's something wrong with my acount. In 2016/2017 I wasn't self employed because I am abroad (at home).
So, I don't know if still needs to form the tax return. thank you. LENUTA BALAN

Hi Lenuta, if you weren't self employed in the 16/17 tax year and don't meet any other criteria you will have to notify us of this to stop any penalties being put on your account. As stated above, if you follow the link you will be able to check if a tax return is required and if not there will be guidance after the process to advise you on how to withdraw from self-assessment.
