VAT not collected MTD DD. Impossible to reach ANYONE in HMRC

This is getting silly. I use Xero. I filed the VAT return on time. A Direct Debit mandate is active but HMRC hasn't taken VAT on time. We have money in the bank - HSBC. I can't get any answer from any helpline. I can't find out how to pay manually. It's taken me ages to find this site so I really hope I can get somewhere this way. If someone from HMRC says get in touch with them, they need to explain how, precisely, I am to do that. I've phoned a dozen times or more now and never get through to anyone despite lengthy waits. The webchat service is NEVER available. I just want to pay the the amount we owe and get on with running my business.

Thanks for your question.

Our helpline is very busy at present and I apologise that you were not able to get through.

We are aware of an issue with Direct Debits for customers who have signed up to MTD. The Direct Debit Instruction is showing as active on our systems but some customers are telling us they have not been collected from their bank account.

This is under investigation and our advice for customers affected by this issue is to make a manual payment.

Hooray - that's a really helpful response. Thank you. I've made a payment just now. Of course there's a slight on-going concern that a direct debit might go through as well which would mean I end up over-paying...!

Thank you for your feedback.

We're still checking to see why these Direct Debits have failed. However, we won't re-apply for payment, so you won't end up paying us twice.
