Can you clarify whether a brand new phone, latest model etc, if that costs to purchase brand new circa £800 and is used exclusively for business e.g number is company contact point, is this aia!? If not how do I show purchase as expense on return

Hi there, thanks for your question

If you use a cash basis, then you can claim it as an allowable expense in the self-employment expense box "Telephone, fax, stationery and other office costs". (See HMRC manual HS222)

If you use traditional accounting:

You wouldn't be able to claim it under Annual Investment Allowance specifically, but you could still claim it as a Capital Allowance in the box titled "Other Capital Allowances". (HMRC manual CA23130)

For more info on Capital Allowances, you may want to look at CA23080 ; and for 1st year allowances you can take a look at CA23110.
