Do I need to complete a tax return if I didn’t earn anything?

20/01/2018 17:13:23
I set up my business with the intention of working part time and caring for my Mom. However, Mom’s health deteriorated and I was caring for her full time.

I had some business expenses but nothing major and I understand from a recent HMRC webinar that I can claim those back for up to seven years, so I could include these in my 2017/18 tax return.

So do I need to complete a return for 2016/17 when my earnings were zero?

Many thanks.

Hi

You are referring to pre trading expenditure.

Please refer to the following links:

https://www.gov.uk/hmrc-internal-manuals/business-income-manual/bim46351

https://www.gov.uk/hmrc-internal-manuals/business-income-manual/bim46355

The qualifying pre trading expenditure is treated as incurred on the day on which the trade is first carried on.

Kind regards

Hi,

Thanks for responding to my post about whether I need to complete a tax return for 2016/17 even though my earnings were zero.

The response you gave is very helpful regarding my prextrading expenditure but it doesn’t help me understand whether I need to do a tax return. Can you respond to this aspect of my query too please?

Many thanks,

Hi

If you did not have any turnover, you will not be required to complete a tax return. However if we have asked you to do one, you will need to contact us to let us know, as we will need to cancel the return.Kind regards
