Re:Making Tax Digital for VAT - Use software to submit your VAT Returns

Good morning Malc

If you are registered for VAT and your taxable turnover is above the VAT registration threshold (currently £85,000), you must keep digital business records and send your VAT returns to HMRC using MTD-compatible software. For the vast majority of businesses this applies to accounting periods starting on or after 1 April 2019. If you are below the threshold and continue to be below the threshold going forward you will not be affected by Making Tax Digital, unless you voluntarily sign up.
VAT is a self-assessing tax, so please follow the guidance included in these links

We use Accounting software daily and download VAT data and adjustment data in spreadsheet for VAT return. We calculate the final VAT return in spreadsheet. My question is how we prove that there is a digital link between the accounting software and spreadsheet.

Hi Capcom,

A digital link is an electronic or digital transfer, or exchange of data, between software programs, products or applications.

I have attached a link below to show typical examples of a ‘digital link’

VAT Notice 700/22: Making Tax Digital for VAT

These are not exhaustive, but as long as you can demonstrate in any possible that one exists, then you are compliant with the new rules being introduced.

HMRC will give businesses until 31 March 2020 to make sure there are digital links between software products. Before that date, cut and paste will be an acceptable way to transfer information.

Thanks for your question.

I am sorry to hear that you encountered difficulty with your VAT return. HMRC are keen to help businesses to move to Making Tax Digital. HMRC, accountants and software suppliers are providing a range of support options for those who may find the transition to a more digital way of doing tax more difficult. From the description of your issues it sounds like you either have not signed up to Making Tax Digital or not enabled the MTD element of your software package however without more detail it is difficult to provide a response.

We have been providing a steady stream of information via HMRC’s own channels, the Agent Blog, Agent Update and Agent Talking Points, as well as to accountancy trade press, explaining how MTD will work and what business can do to prepare. We also published an updated VAT Notice providing further guidance for agents and businesses on the digital record keeping and return requirements of MTD for VAT.

HMRC has a rich digital support offering for businesses (including webinars and YouTube training videos) which we will use to deliver MTDB support, in conjunction with the support that agents, software providers and others will offer.

Should you need further assistance, HMRC has a dedicated team of advisers offering webchat and telephony support. They can be contacted via the HMRC ‘Contact Us’ page on GOV.UK.
